Two Faiths/One Family

An Interfaith Outreach Initiative of American Jewish University
Supported by the Rosalinde & Arthur Gilbert Foundation

"The 2 Faiths/1 Family evening created a respectful, warm, and sacred space for me to share my experience as a Jewish woman, wife, mother and daughter creating a Jewish home and family with a non-Jewish spouse; to hear the experiences of a surprisingly diverse group of people whom I recognized from our community but did not know until that evening; and to feel heard, seen and appreciated."

The Two Faiths/One Family Initiative is dedicated to welcoming, engaging, and supporting interfaith couples and families by sparking creative, non-judgmental conversations about the complex role Judaism plays in their lives. The living room salon, hosted by interfaith couples and attended by clergy, is at the core of this initiative and has three objectives:

  • To listen to couple's stories and needs
  • To discern if there are programs that would be useful, as well as ways to ensure our communities are welcoming and accessible for interfaith families
  • To spark conversations among interfaith couples on the complex role religion plays in their lives

"It was incredibly powerful and affirming to hear from so many diverse couples who had dealt with the same challenges that my relationship was just starting to face. Love is love is love, and it's so beautiful to know there's a burgeoning community that sees through the boundaries and labels, a community that welcomes all."

Hosting a Salon

As partners in this initiative, the Miller Introduction to Judaism program will contribute:

  • Expert facilitation the day-of by a trained and experienced member of our team
  • Guidance in marketing, recruiting attendees and executing a successful event
  • Expense re-imbursement for light dinner and drinks for attendees

In order to make this a successful evening, we ask that you:

  • Market and recruit couples to attend
  • Identify an interfaith couple to host on the date selected
  • Co-ordinate RSVPs

"I wish this program was available 18 years ago, when my husband and I were first talking about marriage. It was quite moving to have our rabbis want to hear about our experiences, and really wonderful to meet and share stories with other interfaith couples."
